Let's talk

What if

we develop the first holistic patient experience for children with heart disease?

What if we created a place to support the development of all people with congenital heart defects – and empower them to reach their full potential?

Together with the Kinderherzen Foundation and the German Heart Center in Munich, we set out to explore this question and make the future visible.

Shortly
A vision of an holistic healthcare approach in cardiologic care named Lumea. The goal is to support people with congenital heart disease in their life development and growth. In a methodical co-creative vision sprint, we elaborated a hybrid concept of a physical place with medical and mental health services combined with digital applications. Identification of business adn funding opportunities were part of the measures.

Context and Motivation

Visualizing thoughts.

For almost 10 years, Dr. Julia Lemmer, cardiologist at the German Heart Center Munich, has had the question in her head: What if she could create a place to support all people with congenital heart defects in their development and encourage them to develop their full potential?
Together with the Kinderherzen e.V. Foundation, we had the opportunity to find possible solutions in a vision sprint and the task of making the future visible.

The challenge was therefore to develop an image and concept based on pure thought that, in addition to medical requirements, also takes into account the mental and emotional needs of those affected and makes life easier for everyone around them.

Research
56
%

German healthcare institutions currently rely predominantly on analog, paper-based communication for the exchange of medical data.

McKinsey E-Health Monitor 2023/24

2,5
%

Children with congenital heart defects (CHD) account for less than 1% of the child population, yet cause around 2.5% of all pediatric inpatient admissions – a clear indicator of high care intensity.

50
%

For adults with CHD, the rate of experiencing a mood or anxiety disorder in their lifetime is about 50%, compared to about 30% for adults in the general population.

25
%

Children with complex CHD have an approximately 25% higher risk of below-average academic performance and an approximately 50% higher risk of requiring special educational support.

Challenges

01
How do we make scientific content visible that is not normally accessible to the public?
02
How can we communicate and address the topic to simply grasp the idea and make people curious?
03
How can we develop a page and make it within 2 weeks only?
Approach & process

Co-creating hybrid holism.

Elaborating a common deep-rooted question led us to dive into several sessions of understanding, sharing insights and figure out essential needs through intense interviews and more.

To tackle this challenge, we decided to set up a stretched vision sprint to quickly develop innovative sparks of ideas, integrate all relevant stakeholders equally and quickly have validated results.

Insights & Strategy

Made for patients.
And for experts.

Observation

Patients

Key insights were gathered through a series of interviews with individuals living with congenital heart defects and their families.

01
Ongoing holistic strain
02
Lack of continuity and security
03
Insufficient psychological and social support
04
Need for a sense of normalcy
Observation

Experts

We conducted additional interviews with senior physicians, ICU nurses, and other medical professionals to broaden our understanding.

01
No holistic perspective
02
Poor interconnection and coordination
03
Lack of capacity and time pressure
04
Central need for a guiding management role

Parents and those affected don’t need more isolated services. What they need is a truly connected infrastructure that brings medical care together with everyday life. We’re creating a place to live. A space where people feel supported medically, socially and emotionally. A place where fear of being different can slowly give way to a new sense of positive normality.

Outcome & Design

A connected living space.

Originally conceived as a physical space bringing together experts from cardiology to psychotherapy, Lumea quickly evolved into something much more. It became a place of the future – merging a unique architectural concept with a holistic digital ecosystem.

A medical center that radiates comfort, AI-supported patient data accessible to both patients and professionals, an interior unlike anything seen in healthcare, and a digital companion that empowers and supports you.
Lumea is all that and so much more.

Our take aways
01
We need to think in the fusion of digital and physical spaces
02
True holism can only emerge from a holistic team
03
Design is the differentiator in business modeling
04
Even in the most regulated systems lie the most radical business opportunities
